What we do

The Auditor-General provides assurance to Parliament on the accountability and performance of the Victorian public sector.

To achieve this, VAGO annually conducts over 530 financial audits and numerous performance audits across a diverse range of portfolios including infrastructure, transport, health and social services, education, water, local government, insurance, justice, treasury and superannuation. Such a broad range of portfolios allows our people to gain unrivalled audit experience working throughout Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Who you’ll work with

The Office of the Auditor-General is responsible for VAGO’s audit quality framework, financial reporting advisory and legal compliance functions and supports both Financial Audit and Performance Audit divisions. It is responsible for providing auditing technical advice and maintaining financial audit methodology in the conduct of audits of financial statements, estimated financial statements, performance statements, acquittal audits and all other types of audits VAGO provides audit or assurance opinions on. It is also responsible for performing quality reviews (Financial Audit and Performance Audit) of VAGO engagement leaders and contracted Audit Service Providers and providing technical auditing training to Financial Audit and Performance Audit divisions as required. 

What you’ll do

The Governance and Compliance Officer is part of a small team in the Office of the Auditor-General that ensures VAGO’s audit program is supported by high quality services across business and risk planning, control framework operations, and compliance monitoring and reporting. Reporting to the Senior Manager Governance, the Governance and Compliance Officer is a technical expert, with an eye for detail, who possesses expertise across a broad range of governance and compliance practices in a public or private sector setting.

What you’ve studied

  • Tertiary qualifications in a field such as Business, Commerce, Governance, Project management, Accounting, Social Sciences, Public Policy or similar.
  • Significant experience in governance, compliance, risk and business improvement.
  • Demonstrated understanding of project portfolio management methodologies and tools.
  • Proficiency and experience using the Microsoft Office suite of applications including SharePoint and Power BI.

What else you need to know

  • When not working from home, this  role is based at 35 Collins Street, Melbourne
  • Travel to various work locations throughout Victoria and Australia may be required
  • VAGO employees are required to comply with public sector requirements for ethical conduct, conflict of interest, Occupational Health & Safety, Diversity in the Workplace, the Human Rights Charter and Equal Opportunity principles
  • All VAGO employees are required to undergo a criminal record check and complete a Declaration of Independence on commencing employment and periodically thereafter
